Cruising to Cozumel Mexico

Maine Coast Guide l Cruises l Family Cruise Tips l Labadee Haiti l

Cozumel Mexico is a very popular port of call for cruise ships. San Miguel on the island of Cozumel is located off the north eastern coast of Mexico, with the city of San Miguel as port. Our day here aboard the Royal Caribbean Independence of the Sea brought seven huge ships, and as many as 40,000 passengers descending upon this 17th century Mexican town. The cruise ship terminal is packed with shops, a Senior Frogs, and a few hotels and bars a few blocks away. he cruise ship shopping plaza handles the throngs of cruise passengers surprisingly well. See our Photo Gallery of Cozumel Mexico.

During our
Cruise aboard Freedom of the Seas Royal Caribbean, we found a fun excursion to Playa Maya, a beach resort with a floating water park (picture something from the reality show Wipe Out). Your all inclusive excursion to Playa Maya starts with a brief bus ride from Cozumel, a beach barbeque, beach chairs, and access to the water parks- the most challenging of which is a short swim out from the beach. Playa Maya is indeed a beach playground for adults and kids, with three watersides and several swimming pools – adult pools to animated kiddie pools with fountains and characters. The staff organizes beach games with live music and there is and open bar for the day. You can even access free wifi if you need to connect to home via the internet.

Other Cozumel excursions include jeep tours, snorkeling, catamaran and sail boat tours, parasailing, or a visit to the Mayan Ruins, at the Mayan city of Tulum.

The shopping right off the ship in the Cozumel plaza is excellent, many jewelry stores, t shirt shops, and rum and tequila outlets. Here you will find native lace dresses, straw hats, wood carvings, and gold and silver jewelry, plus name brand watches and hand bags. Be prepared to be hustled, but you can and should negotiate on any big purchase, from pesos to US dineros. Silver and gold are both native, as are gem stones like topaz. I recommend you be careful touring Cozumel, if you venture beyond the gated cruise ship terminal. It's Mexico. Visit our Photo Gallery of Cozumel Mexico.
