Italy is an ideal country for a girls getaway - its friendly, super scenic and
there is so much to see and do. The people are beautiful and gracious, the
food is delicious, the wine flows freely and cheap, and the wealth of sightseeing is extraordinary.
You can travel Italy by car, train or bus. For our Italy girls getaway we
started and ended our trip in Milan, Milano, with direct flights to Malpensa from
the US. We visited Florence,
Siena, Tuscany, Pisa, and
The Cinque Terre as well in
an amazing 10 day holiday.
Must see in Milano:
The Fashion Capital of Italy is a great last stop, saving the city for last once you have explored the countryside – you can flyout of Malpensa airport 40 minutes away. You can also tag on a trip to beautiful Lake Como - its just a half hour away and closer to the airport.
Go to the Piazza Del Duomo – and climb the 223 stairs to the Cathedral rooftop to walk amid the 18th-century marble spires with marvelous views of the city and beyond - even the mountains in the distance. The Milan Cathedral is the 4th largest in Europe, be sure to visit the creepy Crypt below too. Warning: no short skirts or tanks tops, legs covered to the knee and shoulders must be covered to enter the church or you will be turned away, shunned by the guards - believe me!
Lunch at Rinascenti Terrace on the 7th Floor for great views of Milano's Duomo Cathedral, and the rest of Milan in a very chic alfresco atmosphere – order the mozzarella. Espresso comes with a petite ice cream at the end
Stroll through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II - Milan's 1870 four story, glass ceiling shopping pavilion of top designer boutiques, elegant bars and cafes. Prada, Mercedes Benz, LV, YSL, very chic. Sip a Prosecco at Gatto Rosso and watch the beautifully-dressed Milanese pass by. The new Seven Star Galleria Hotel Suites on the top floor looks decidedly posh, complete with your own butler - next trip
La Scala is the Italian Opera House right next door – last minute tickets go on sale each afternoon for that night’s opera.
La Brera is the neighborhood of up and coming Italian designers, they work and display their fashions in their classic Milano storefronts.
Milan's Fashion Quadrilatero, the crisscrossing streets with the big fashion labels is best explored walking up Manzoni from La Scala to Monte Napoleone where you then window-shop your way down this world-famous fashion Ave by all the top designer ateliers and stores. Gucci, Ferragamo, Prada, Versace - all my friends are here. My new favorite is Phillip Plein, but he's German. Once you arrive at Teatro Nuovo, head back toward the Duomo on Corso Vittorio Emmanuelle passing trendy more affordable shops like Coin, H&M, and a Designer Outlet.
Navigli is the place to be in the evening, this riverfront Milan neighborhood is very chic, casual and fun at night. Apertivo at Manhattan Bar is $10 Euro for a cocktail and a spread of Italian-fare happy hour snacks. Outdoor tables are the “it” spot in Navigli to see and be seen. The "passegiata" is the Italian promenade of people each evening, and a riverside Navigli cafe is the best venue to sit, sip and watch this beautiful tradition. Far Niente - the joy of doing nothing, but doing it with style and passion. We love Italy.
For a girls getaway to Milano Italy, or a family holiday, we recommend at least one night in Milan, and we highly recommend visiting Siena, Tuscany, Florence, and the Cinque Terre and perhaps Venice, and nearby Lake Garda in your Italian trip.
