“Ski & Glacier World Zillertal 3000 – Tux-Finkenberg” is the most recent name for what was previously marketed as “Zillertal 3000”
Zillertal 3000 is a combination of 2 mega ski complexes, Mayrhofner Bergbahnen and Hintertux Glacier. The “3000” in Zillertal 3000 denotes Hintertux Glacier elevation at over 3000 Meters. The entire ski region is over 150 kilometers of pistes and 65 lifts all combined. These ski areas are not interconnected however, a bus included on your ski pass can bring you to both.
Mayrhofner Bergbahnen includes 5 skiing areas on 57 lifts, also branded as Mountopolis… the mountain regions of Ahorn, Penken, Finkenberg, Rastkogel and Eggalm are all part of this ski resort region. Ahorn with its 5 lifts and 10km of trails sits alone on one side of the town of Mayrhofen. Finkenberg, Rastkogel and Eggalm are all interconnected with lifts and trails on the other side – you can ski out of the villages of Mayrhofen, Finkenberg, Tux Lanersbach, Tux Vorderlanesbach or Hippach. Other names within this Mayrhofner Bergbahnen ski region include Mountopolis and Penken and Mayrhogen Hippach. The village of Mayrhofen is quite lively with lots of lodging options, hotels, après ski bars and ski shops. See our review on skiing Mountopolis- Mayrhofen.
Hintertux Glacier has 10 lifts including two long interconnected cable cars from the base, 62 kilometers of prepared trail skiing, and vast above tree line skiing including the glacier, which has a super long ski season, the longest ski season in Austria. On a clear day skiing the glacier is heavenly. When its snowing or blowing, its challenging – a complete white out with no definition. A highlight of Hintertux Glacier is the walking tour of the cave and ice palace within the glacier – a must see for a separate admission fee. The base of Hintertux glacier has a few hotels, après ski bars and ski shops. We loved staying in the village of Tux down the valley road at the lovely Hotel Alpenjuwel, where we could easily access the terrain at Mountopolis walking to the gondola, and it was a 20-minute drive or free bus ride to Hintertux glacier.
