La Thuile Espace San Bernardo
La Thuile in Italy is Mont Blanc’s Wild Side in the beautiful Aosta Valley. This ski resort is also referred to as Espace San Bernardo including neighboring La Rosiere in France. Together, these international ski resorts offer skiers 38 lifts, 82 pistes and over 150-kilometers of skiing in varying aspects, all kinds of terrain, and spectacular views. La Thuile is just 20-minutes from Courmayeur and 25-minutes to Mont Blanc Skyway and the Mont Blanc tunnel to France and Chamonix.

We loved skiing La Thuile, big mountain skiing, decent elevation (2700-meters) 8,800’ to assure good snow, sensational scenery, and a nice local feel you don’t get from bigger more famous resorts, but still great variety of skiing, on mountain chalets for lunch, and a lovely Italian ski village.
La Thuile is surprisingly affordable, as of 2026 the 2nd most affordable ski ticket in Italy they claim. La Thule is also in Aosta Valley which is a part of the Ikon pass.
La Thuile’s lifts emanate from the upper mid-century mod ski village. We preferred staying down in the ancient village a 10 minute walk or 5 minute bus ride. It takes two to three lifts, starting on the Suches Gondola or a quad chair, to La Thuile’s 2579-meter summit. But don’t dismiss the lower mountain terrain. Trails 2 & 3 cascade back to the base, these are impressive World Cup trails. Trail 5 Muret is a fun Black Diamond to the base, while 6 & 7 are catch all trails on each side of the mountain bringing you back to the base. Off Trail 4 you will find some very good steep tree skiing particularly on low-visibility powder days.

La Thuile’s upper mountain is a grand plateau, with lots of easy low pitched Red trails, wide and well-groomed. Cruise down to Arnouvaz and Argillien lifts for some more fun pistes – best first thing in the morning as they get sun all day.
Ski in to a chalet for a cappuccino at Argillien or lunch at La Maison Carrel, their Gnocchi is legendary with local Aosta blue cheese and apples, the views are superb too. Be sure you reserve a table, inside or on the sun terrace, its popular!
Three chair lifts on La Thuile’s backside – Mont Belvedere side, offer steeper fun north-facing runs, and some easy to reach off-piste. These lifts, Piccolo San Bernardo and Forclaz quads with bubble covers, also connect you to the French side skiing, La Rosiere. So many skiers will just be passing through on their “cross-country” trek Italy to France and back in reverse.
The French side – skiing La Rosiere of Espace San Bernado

Skiing into France, La Rosiere is included in your ski ticket, you ride the Chardonett lift to Fort de la Redoute and you have crossed the border to France – voila, no passport needed. You will actually pass old WW2 fort remains on the hillside.
La Rosiere is a whole other impressive ski resort, also vast, almost exclusively south-facing with over a dozen sunny, moderately pitched trails. In spring, on warm ski days, you’ll want to ski La Rosiere’s slopes first thing, as these trails catch sun all day and soften up quickly.
Wonderful chalets dot the French slopes as well. We liked Toute Poudre for its sun deck and teh simplicity of a delicious French baguette sandwich. Farthest skiers left (west) in La Rosiere is Roches Noires and Ecudets areas, with lovely wide intermediate runs, served by modern lifts, lots of ski in ski out lodging here too. The view of Les Arc indicates you are near more French Alps skiing, La Plagne, Tignes and Val D’Isere are less than a half hour from La Rosieres base.
A super long poma, Bellecombe, takes you gradually from France back to Italy along a grand snow plateau returning to La Thuile. Here Mont Belvedere truly offers something for everything off all sides, from easy cruisers to steeper more demanding pitches. A few nice chalets sit in this valley, which is sunny by afternoon. A lively lovely mountain chalet on the Belvedere side is Roxi Bar, sit inside the cozy lodge where you must reserve a table in advance, or out on the sun terrace. Their Eggplant Parmigiana was THE best!

Be sure to ski La Thuile’s signature ski run Franco Berthod – Piste #3 – ski its super steep pitches, up to a 76% gradient – one of the steepest trails in Italy, and imagine racing Downhill on this slope when icy in a World Cup or Olympic caliber competition.
Be on the lookout for Thuily, the big furry mascot St Bernard, he skis and parades around La Thuile village and slopes to kids delight, and adults like me for a photo opp!
Le Petite Skieur, near the base of La Thuile, has classic Italian pizzas and local burgers, a friendly vibe, and apres ski with just a short ski after, but this spot doesn’t have the panoramic view.
Apres ski in La Thuile is mellow compared to other Alps, Ischgl, St Anton, Megeve, but La Buvette at the base of Les Suches Gondola bumps out DJ music, serves Aperol and beer in the plaza by the Gondola. You can sit and sip with instructors and guides, and watch skiers, then patrol, descend their last runs, before catching the free bus back to your hotel.
The historic Village of La Thuile is a 10 minute walk from the slopeside village, or a free Navette bus ride. This village thrived by mining for anthracite back in the day, to make roof tiles – namesake La Thuile – throughout the region. The architecture speaks of centuries ago, with the towering cathedral St Nicola, dating back to 1093, as a signature and hourly clock tower chime, to the ancient village of La Thuile. High end hotels in La Thuile include 5-star Montana Lodge and Spa, La Miramonti Hotel and Wellness 4-star, Relais de Chateau Blanc.

Angela’s Café in La Thuile village is THE Place to go for a breakfast cappuccino and pastry, and later in the day for Apertivo. You’ll find locals, skiers and visitors, in this cozy space with pretty pink coffee cups and charming accents. Chocolat is another fun place in the afternoon on the Bridge for sweet tooths, they make gorgeous chocolates, coffees and treats.
The Best restaurant in La Thuile village is Coq Maf – wonderful cuisine from classic Italian pasta to delicious roast chicken, and superb vitello tonato with capers. Hosts Monica and Asia are superb and talented foodies! Pepita is another neat spot for dinner in the village – with excellent cuisine and a varied menu, in a lovely setting. La Thuile has a half dozen restaurants, La Grotta, Creche, Coeur du Village.
La Thuile’s 3-day ski ticket includes admission to Mont Blanc’s Sky Way in Courmayeur, which offers stunning up-close views of Europe’s tallest peak Mont Blanc. The Skyway consists of two spectacular rotating gondolas to impressive mountain lodges built in 2015, don’t miss the high elevation Cave du Mont Blanc Wines!

We highly recommend skiing La Thuile, over busier more famed, more pricey Courmayeur, you can easily ski both. La Thuile just has an alpine ambiance many ski resorts have lost, in the hustle and bustle. La Thuile still celebrates locals, lovely views, a relaxed atmosphere, affordability, and the joy of skiing, and you can cross-country ski to France and back to Italy Viva La Difference & La Dolce Vita in the same ski day
