Ski Safaris
A Ski Safaris is a planned ski trip that visits multiple ski areas in one itinerary (aka a multi-resort ski trip). Unlike an African Safari, your “game” is skiing snowy mountains, not seeking lions and tigers in the bush. Ideally, each ski resort in your “safari” is no more than an hour drive apart. In some sections of the western US, the distances can be 2 – 3+ hours drive between ski areas. Some ski resorts or regions you may stay at a few nights, depending on the size of the ski area and terrain plus the off-slope things to do in the resort or ski town. Some “ski areas” are just that, a good ol’ fashion ski area with a few lifts and no lodging so you ski the day, or just a few hours, then move to the next resort or resort town for your lodging.
We could call it “Ski Touring” but that term has come to mean when a skier sets off out-of-bounds on an AT adventure for the day. It could be called a “Ski Itinerary”, but that sounds so clinical, a ski safari is a fun adventure where you ski several independent ski areas in a circuit and experience different mountains and ski town cultures along the way.
Ski Safaris generally involve driving, renting a car. If you want to fly in and out of different airports, be sure to check on any car drop off fee before making flight reservations. If your ski safari crosses the US/Canadian Border, we have yet to find a car rental that would allow you to return to a different country than your origin.
We’ve done ski safaris using Swiss trains and buses, but we warn you that lugging your gear it is not easy. Ski safaris are also not entirely conducive to renting ski equipment as you have to get set up at each ski area – time consuming and expensive.
