Stowe Vermont is classic New England skiing. Stowe makes our favorite place to ski list for many reasons. Surely you have heard about the legendary Front Four – some of the steepest trails on Vermont’s highest peak – Mt. Mansfield. Stowe is actually two seperate peaks, Mansfield for advanced skiers, and Spruce Peak where the lesson programs and intermediate and beginner terrain are located with supreme views of the dramatic summit.

The best place to stay is the beautiful Stowe Mountain – Lodge at Spruce Peak – the best ski hotel in The East, which anchors the regal Rocky Mountain style pedestrian Spruce Peak Village with a centerpiece ice rink, Kids Adventure Center, a Spa, Whiskey Bar, boutiqe ski shops,  and a Performing Arts Center… its very Beaver Creek comes to Vermont. Guests of The Lodge have a ski valet to tend to their gear – bringing your skis in and out daily and drying your ski boots overnight. You can be soaking in the expansive mountainview hot tub and pool après ski with the kids, or sipping cocktails at Hourglass or WhiskeyPig while the kids ice skate.

Vail Resorts owns Stowe Mountain! This was an Epic addition to Vail’s Epic Pass, when you consider lift tickets at Stowe are $229+ a day, Stowe season passes once cost $1800, and the Epic Pass is around $1000 for 60+ resorts! However, that has also brought epic-crowds to this Vermont ski resort, including traffic on the Mountain Road too.

There is more to Stowe than skiing Front Four laps on the swift Forerunner Quad. There’s scenic lunch at The Cliff Lodge atop the bright red Gondola, then spa treatments at Lodge at Spruce Peak followed by après ski at the Hourglass, or elegant dining at Solstice – ask for the Chef’s Table.

You can also visit the quaint village of Stowe, the many shops and pubs along the Mountain Road, trace the history of alpine skiing at Vermont’s Ski Museum on Main Street, sample the Trapp Family Lodge Brewery, or Picnic at Field Guide.

We loved Stowe until Vail Resorts took over.  Families will find ski and snowboard instruction and all-day kids camps on snow. And there’s always snow in Stowe you know… that’s a local saying. Locals also love to get their “10 by 10,” ten laps on the Fore Runner Quad by 10am, since the lift has been known to open as early as 7:30am.
