Technically New England consists of six states. However, the majority of our reviews are ski areas in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine – home to the best ski resorts in The East. We love New England skiing, beautiful scenery, great learn to ski programs for the kids at most ski resorts, charming ski towns, genuine people, and fun après ski activities like tubing for the kids, or s’mores by the bonfire.
Maine is home to the two biggest ski resorts, by terrain stats Sugarloaf is #1 with 1,240 acres on one big mountain, and sister Sunday River hosts 870-acres of skiing with amazing lifts interconnecting eight mountain peaks. These are the big sisters, Sugarloaf and Sunday River – worth the journey, but there are a plenty of other lesser-known gems like Saddleback.
The Green Mountains of Vermont feature over a dozen of New England’s finest ski mountains, with great trail character, and often quaint ski villages and resorts at the base. Killington is the Beast of the East, with the longest season, and huge terrain. We love Stowe and Sugarbush for their challenging terrain but charming village and slopeside lodging. Okemo is great for families and foodies.
The White Mountain state of New Hampshire has 19 ski resorts and some fabulous skiing and views of Mount Washington, especially at Bretton Woods and Wildcat, to take your breath away. Skiing is New Hampshire’s official winter sport!
Massachusetts has skiing too, we call them feeder ski areas, or starter ski mountains, small, but with good snow making and great family learn to ski and snowboard programs.
If you can ski in the East you can ski anywhere – so the adage goes. Northern New England’s ski resorts put those words into action with terrain for any ability from beginner to back country, with changing conditions from fresh snow, to packed powder and groomed, to spring corn snow. You will find a wide range of slope-side resorts waiting to be discovered, from small picturesque villages to big ski resort towns. Of the 460 ski resorts in the country, over 100 are in The North East.
