While everyone flocks to Colorado and Utah, we have found family ski trips to Idaho take you to the origin of skiing – and skiing in its essence.

Idaho has 18 ski areas, from lesser known family resorts like Bogus Basin, Soldier and Silver to world class resorts famous Sun Valley.

Bogus Basin is the 1st stop on the ski tour. Under an hour from Boise is this family friendly, affordable, and fun ski mountain. Stay in Boise – a cool western town, or continue on towards McCall after skiing.

We love skiing at Brundage, this happy humble ski hill has great views from the front and back side, plenty of elbow room and a very friendly vibe. You’re in the Payette National Forest, with abundant natural snow and awesome scenery of Payette Lake, the Salmon River Mountains, Seven Devils Wilderness and Hells Canyon.

Staying in the lakefront town of McCall is very special. We love the Shore Lodge in McCall right on the water – an rustic elegant ponderosa pine lodge. Be sure to check out cat skiing at Brundage or snowmobiling in Idaho.

Tamarack is a beautiful ski area, with sunny southern exposure, just a half hour from McCall. With 2,800 feet of vertical on 2,000-acres, it’s a quiet haven for its private homeowners and for skiers and snowboarders. Tamarack has a great survival story too- from corporate collapse (hello & goodbye Credit Suisse) to HOA perseverance.

Sun Valley, 5 hours away, is the stuff of ski legends, big terrain, steep pitches, and a great town at the base. Stay and play in Sun Valley for several days.

Soldier is another cool Idaho ski success story, just over an hour from Sun Valley. Once owned by Bruce Willis, this community ski mountain has plenty of terrain, even cat-skiing, and amazing views of the Sawtooth Mountains. From Soldier its just 2 hours back to Boise airport.
