Bonneval sur Arc ski area is a high-elevation remote ski area deep in the Rhone Alps. This is known as the Haute Maurienne region. This amazing alpine valley is home to 5 French ski resorts, all worthy, fun, uncrowded, and affordable. Bonneval is a unique and beautiful canyon, the end of the road, with steep Alps encompassing the village and ski area. As the crow flyes you are just a few km from Val’D’Isere and not far from Tignes, La Plagne and Les Arcs. In fact, a summer road from Bonneval connects to Val D’Isere – completely blanketed in snow in winter. In these Haute Maurienne Alps, you are also right on the Italian border.
Bonneval is known as one of the snowiest in the French Alps, thanks to its 3000-meter elevation, over 9,800′. Elevation is so important these days skiing the Alps, valleys can be green, while the peaks are snowy, and snowmaking trails and lifts provide access to upper mountain key terrain.
Bonneval is reputed for its vast Freeride Terrain among those in the know, so hire a guide to explore the off-piste terrain. With a Mountain Guide you can reach amazing steep chutes, glacier caves and more. We enjoyed exploring the easy-to-reach off-piste, however much of the snow bowl terrain had been skied the week prior during their Bonneval Freeride competition. The French skiers explore the off-piste terrain more avidly than the Swiss or Austrian, so powder days, the fresh tracks go quickly.

With just 6 ski lifts at Bonneval sur Arc, 3 fixed grip quads and a few old poma lifts, this humble but friendly ski area has just a dozen prepared pitstes, but they are long, well-groomed and interesting. The highest quad brings you to 3000-meters, 9842-feet. Bonneval has bizarre lift hours, its so “French”. When we visited (2025) the base chair opened at 9:10, and the upper lifts open 20-30 minutes after. Its that kind of rustic relaxed ski place, mostly local skiers and return vacationers. When we visited in 2025, lift tickets were only $32 Euro per day!
Bonneval ski area has just one on mountain chalet restaurant, tucked below the trails mid-mountain – called Le Criou – serving classic French cuisine, mountain salads, Croziflette, the BEST housemade fries, and a menu du jour. At the base of the slopes, in the “newer” village, are several lunch spots – Howard’s and La Marmotte. Apres ski is very tame here, if that’s what you quest, go to bustling nearby Megève, 2 Alpes or Alpe d’Huez.
What is really special about Bonneval sur Arc is the delightful alpine village that dates to 1532! The Vieux Village is absolutely charming, snowy pedestrian alleyways lead to beautiful native wood and stone chalets that lean and bow to the weight of the snow as they have for five centuries. Bonneval’s village was spared during WW II’s German occupation and destruction of several nearby village in France, which makes it precious. There’s a cozy fromagerie, a butcher, boulangerie, wine and gift shop, plus three cozy restaurants. We enjoyed a great lunch at Auberge D’Oul (even though the French waiters were surly – something we only encounter in France) and at La Cabane – which was so delicious and much “friendlier”.

The upper “new” village of Bonneval, located at the base of the ski lift is more modern, but still historic, with authentic alpine architecture. There’s a market, a hotel or 2 and condos, two ski shops, and a few restaurants and cafes, but still small and compact. Be sure to try the local Myrtille (blueberry) aperitif liquor, or Genepi made from an alpine flower.
For a special Bonneval adventure, snowshoe, winter hike or ski tour from the base of the ski area up 4-kilometers on the Route de L’Ecot to the ancient village of L’Ecol at 6,500.’ This medieval rustic hamlet has incredible stone wood chalets tucked in the valley, only reached by ATV, skis or walking in the winter. It’s incredible that a full-service restaurant, Chez Mumu, sits in the heart of this authentic alpine village and serves a wonderful lunch, crepes or beef bourguignon with wine, and delectable homemade dessert tarts. It’s a 1-hour adventure hiking, or randonee, up the mountain in winter. 7.5-kilometers round trip. Its so extraordinary and worthwhile to witness this amazing high-altitude village made by hand centuries ago, now a protected site since the 1970s.

Just down from Bonneval is the popular Nordic town of Bessan – where a big plateau of groomed Nordic trails circle the valley. The French Nordic and Biathlon teams train here. When we visited, the dog sled championships were in town. A ski safari in this region can include ski stops at Bonneval, and nearby ski areas of Val Cenis, La Norma, Aussois, and Valfrejus in this beautiful Haute Maurienne valley. This French Alps region may have more affordable, big-mountain ski areas per square mile than anywhere on the planet! Check it out for a unique off-the-beaten-path family ski trip.
