Located at the entrance to the Pitztal Valley above Jerzens, Hochzeiger is a family-friendly ski resort in the heart of the Tyrol. The resort offers beautiful panoramas of Pitztal’s mountains and is generally sheltered from the wind. The ski resort has 9 ski lifts between 1,450 – 2,500 meters in altitude. With 90% snowmaking coverage and much of the terrain above 2,000 meters, there is generally good snow from December to April on 40-kilometers of prepared pistes.

Hochzeiger’s base gondola from the busy little alpine village above Jerzens brings you up to three bubble-covered detachable chairs (a four, a six and an eight). Hochzeiger has a good amount of groomers, and vast freeriding, off-piste skiing, with good natural snow.

As a medium size ski resort, Hochzeiger feels pretty big, with its two separate summit peaks, Sechszeiger at 2395 and Hochzeiger at 2500-meters, so up to 8,000′.

Dont miss Trail 10, called Panorama, its a long scenic descent from the top of the Panorama six-pack. Trails 3, 4 and 12, are fun black diamond groomers. Hochzeiger has several great “ski routes” ungroomed but marked as well.

Pitzi – a yellow mountain goat – is a fun mascot well represented around the family-friendly resort, with ski camps, snow parks, and a “fun line” animated ski trail. Kids under 10 ski free with parents. Hochzeiger also has a 6-kilometer rodel run, plus winter-wandering trails.

For lunch in a classic chalet, ski down to Stadler Hutte below “mittel station”, it has a cozy interior, we liked the sunroom, and there’s a beautiful deck by the ski slope. Hochzeiger Haus next door, and Tanz Alm closer to mittelstation, are also locally recommended.

For apres ski back in Jerzens’ village, Schrim Bar Liss is a lively umbrella bar with music, as is Illegal right at the base of the slopes.

Jerzens has a few chalet hotels, several big ski shops, restaurants and bars, its not quite as charming as other Austrian ski villages – like Obergurgl but its walkable and convenient, with local buses coming and going frequently.

We stayed at Hotel Venetblick – super convenient to the gondola and the ski shops – its family-friendly, with modern suites, half board (breakfast and dinner), with an indoor pool, a small pine sauna, and ski storage room. Ask for a suite with balcony, and a window table for dining.
