The ski resort of Obertilliach is located in the Lesachtal Valley, very near the Italian border in the southernmost part of East Tirol, with quality skiing and fabulous views of the Dolomites.

We loved our ski day here, Obertilliach is a fun off-the-beaten-path gem of a ski area. A long 10 passenger gondola – the Golzentipp – spans over 2000-vertical feet, taking you up to a high alpine south-facing plateau, where two TBars serve about five trails with a spectacular panorama of the Alps and the Dolomites of Italy.

The upper Glamplift, lol – nothing glamorous about this reliable old TBar, serves a few beautifully scenic gentle intermediate trails. The lower Bloaslift tbar serves one black run.

Obertilliach is a winter wonderland for skiers, winter wanderers, rodelers – aka sledders, hikers, snow shoers, people out walking with pets, even para-gliders and anyone wanting to ride the long gondola from the small village up to the mountaintop for views and trails to explore.

We loved skiing the half dozen trails on this sunny high plateau, but found the best ski terrain was the two long prepared pistes to the gondi base, a full 2200’ descent, one on skiers left #10 gets more morning sun while skiers right trail #1 has more twists, turns and pitches in the shade with protected snow quality. At the base is a beginner area by a beautiful church.

Obertilliach has one on mountain hut – the Conny Alm -which sits between the two TBars, at 2000-meters, by the gondola summit. There’s a cozy cafeteria here, with indoor seating, a bar and a grand sun deck.

Obertilliach is a fun mountain for a day or even a few hours, typically uncrowded, affordable, and incredibly scenic. You can even buy one gondola ride for $20 euro.

We saw lots of rodelers, sledders hiking up pulling their sleds for the 7-kilometer sledding descent on trail 10, crazy that the trail is shared with skiers, sledders and uphill climbers.

Obertilliach is probably most famous for its biathlon stadium, one of the world’s most popular training spots for top Nordic athletes. The cross-country trails we passed in this quiet corner of East Tirol looked beautiful, vast, and well-maintained.

This small local ski resort on Golzentipp Mountain overlooking the village is particularly suitable for families with children and those who like to cruise the slopes. Obertilliach is in Austria’s East Tirol which also includes – St Jakob im Defereggental, Lienz Zettersfeld Hochstein, Sillian-Hochpustertal, Kals Matrei – Grossglockner, and Sillian Hochpustertal. You can also ski the Zillertal Valley, and  Kitzbuhel, all on the Tirol Snow Card, and not far from Munich or Innsbruck.
