Its fun to discover a ski area that appears on the trail map as rather basic, only to be surprised by the vastness of its terrain. That’s Télé Mont Noble in Nax Switzerland, on a mountainside above the Rhone River, in the heart of the Valais just 20 minutes from Sion.
With just 4 humble lifts, and no real base area, we were delighted at what we found as we skied Nax Mont Noble – its a cool locals’ Swiss ski area in this beautiful Alps region, part of the Magic Pass.
Dzorniva is an older double chair that delivers you from Nax Télé Mont Noble’s free parking through quiet forested terrain to mid mountain where there’s a lodge and restaurant – la Dzorniva. From here you ski down to the Vachette quad that connects you up to above-tree-line skiing and a few prepared trails. Here Les Planards Poma reaches more terrain, and you can ski southwest to a summit quad in the popular Comb area which opens up to a big bowl of high alpine skiing, plus two long prepared trails.
The dozen trails at Télé Mont Noble have a great pitch, they’re well-groomed and scenic, just fun to ski! And Mont Noble also offers unlimited quantities of easy to reach off-piste skiing on a powder day for “free-riding”, and because it’s not busy, mostly locals, you can find lines days after a storm. The terrain undulates with really entertaining pillow drops and valleys just a short traverse from the trails and lifts.
Take a short Hike to Mont Noble’s summit for amazing views, at to 2640-meters! Or bring a picnic up with you to enjoy after the short but steep climb from the summit lift. The views from up top by the statue of Mary & Jesus and breathtaking, spiritual even.
Our final run from the summit of Mont Noble back to our parking was a full 3,750’ vertical, very impressive for this humble ski area. Télé Mont Noble is “natural snow” – without major snowmaking except for a few snow cannons on the lower mountain trail, as of this 2023 review.
Only thing missing at Nax Mont Noble is a charming Swiss chalet to ski in for a cozy lunch. Chiesso is a cute wood chalet, but was not open for dining during our visit. The mid mountain Dzorniva Lodge offers excellent food self-service style, and a grand sun terrace. We shared a delicious homemade baked Croute with local cheese, ham and egg, and an extraordinary view of the valley. Families of Swiss skiers were out on the balcony enjoying the terrace – the Swiss love to eat outside while skiing, even midwinter.
For lodging nearby, we stayed at a charming chalet 15 minutes toward Sion, Gîte des vignes, in the midst of a beautiful vineyard. Our entire house rental included a spacious modern living room with new kitchen, a big bathroom with oversized tub and laundry, plus a private bedroom. Our favorite space was the outdoor deck overlooking the wines and the valley. From here we were just 15 minutes up the hill to the skiing at Mont Noble, very close to Les 4 Vallées skiing as well.
Definitely ski Tele Mont Noble in Nax for a fun quiet relaxed ski day with amazing terrain and views, not much by way of crowds. This retro ski area has great terrain and a friendly, welcoming vibe. Mont Noble can be part of a ski safari, on the Magic Pass, with skiing nearby at Arolla, Anzere, Leukerbad, Ovronnaz, St Luc/Chandolin, Grimentz-Zinal, Télé Marécottes and more.
