Leukerbad is one of Switzerland’s most dramatic mountain valleys, surrounded by steep rocky cliffs and frozen waterfalls in winter, akin to Lauterbrunnen in the Jungfrau. From Leukerbad family-friendly ski slopes, you have views of 20 unique 4000-meter peaks. Leukerbad is a great family ski holiday with incredibly scenic slopes, an ancient chalet village, activities, thermal hot springs and spas. Leukerbad is now on the Indy Pass, skiers get 2 days skiing on Leukerbad’s 8,000 acres! Leukerbad is also included on the Magic Pass, along with a dozen other Swiss ski resorts in this beautiful Valais Wallis, and over 90 throughout the Alps.

The incredibly historic chalet village of Leukerbad is charming, including the car-free old village center. Leukerbad is perfectly walkable (with good treads on the icy cobblestone in winter) plus there is a free bus system. The Romans first discovered this valley which is loaded with thermal hot springs to this day.
While it’s a steep road to Leukerbad, it has become one of Switzerland’s largest hot spring spa towns. Hence the name Leuker-bad – bad means bath – for the thermal bath hot springs. Leukerbad’s skiing is fun too – high elevation at 2610-meters, 8,500’, with stellar scenery, and the obvious bonus of hot springs at three unique bath facilities in the village “après ski.” Just strolling Leukerbad’s ancient alpine village is extremely pleasant after skiing too.

Skiing Leukerbad for a few days, we found the slopes entertaining, perfectly pitched, especially skiing all the way down to the Gondola or Tram base for the full 4,000’ vertical. Leukerbad has amazing off-piste skiing, much of which you can see from the upper six-pack chair, with a short climb or traverse, but its always best to hire a ski guide to explore, these slopes are avalanche prone, and you could drop off the back side and get lost!
Leukerbad’s on mountain chalets include the Panoramic Rinderhutte – a modern glass self-service restaurant at the top of the Gondola and Tram Station. Here at the top of these 2 lifts there is also an outside umbrella bar. Chalet Briand is located next to the gondola mid-station and offers a large panoramic deck. To find the charming Weid Stűbli hut with a sunny western exposure and great views you must ski off the upper mountain on a narrow twisty, steep trail complete with tunnel back toward the town of Leukerbad. This is a great place for classic Swiss cuisine or a Glühwein in the cozy chalet or on the large sun deck.
The same narrow, twisty tunnel run that brings you to the Weid Stűbli makes for an exciting last run back to Leukerbad village.
Or, if you prefer après ski, after skiing, for your first Apero, ski to the base and stop at Hotel Restaurant Waldhaus complete with a full outdoor and indoor bar, extraordinary cuisine for lunch and dinner, and lively après ski with fire tables, cozy blankets, often with music. We loved staying here!
Gemmi is a cable car across valley for pedestrians, sightseers, sledders and hikers. From Leukerbad’s historic village, this Tram takes you STRAIGHT up to a scenic plateau, and Gemmi’s summit hotel “Berghotel Wildstrubel” restaurant and day spa. Here you can walk to the Gemmi viewing platform overlooking a lake.
Leukerbad’s Snowpark located adjacent to the village, and below the base of the Gemmi Cable Car, offers a great learn to ski area with couple of beginner lifts, ski school and a children’s winter playground. Night skiing and a torchlight parade occurs certain evenings here. There is also a Sports Arena and ice rink near here.
Leukerbad’s three hot spring “Baths” are each unique. Leukerbad Therme is the big family-oriented spa facility with waterslides and kid pools. The more “adult” spa is an impressive glass building called Walliser Alpentherme with a grand outdoor mountain-view pool. Spa Leukerbad Therme 51° is yet another.
We enjoyed skiing Leukerbad’s fun terrain, and exploring this incredibly historic village. We highly recommend staying at Hotel Waldhaus, the closest ski chalet hotel to the Torrent Tram with wonderful food, neat Swiss alpine rooms with balconies, chic apres ski, a dedicated heated ski room, and a wonderful family of generational owners.
The small medieval town of Leuk is 15 minutes away on your scenic hilly drive, this ancient charming hillside village has fortifications, castles and vineyards above the Rhône Valley.
